Product Details

EL6573 - This is the Wilkinson Royal Engineers officer's sword of Colonel John Warre Sill (1852-1921). The sword is numbered 18786 for 1873 (see attached record) and named to Sill (commissioned into the Army in September 1872), who enjoyed a long career. In the 1902 Army List he is recorded as the Commanding Engineer of the Sub-District East in Malta. The sword is in good overall condition, with a bright blade, deep crisp etching, the guard and backpiece have a pleasing patina to the bronze and the grip is in good condition, just with a few of the wires missing. Two flaws worth mentioning are that the cutting edge has a series of small nicks, some of which could perhaps be polished out if desired, and there is a tiny bit of lateral movement in the guard. Other than this, a great example of the pattern, with great provenance and lots of research potential - and of course it's a Wilkinson!
