EL6762 - A WW1 Wilkinson Royal Artillery officer's sword, from the estate of Major-General Gilbert Minto Elliot (1897 – 1969), CB , CBE, DSO, MC. Fresh to market. Born in 1897 in Bangalore, Madras, the second son of Colonel Robert Henry Elliot MD FRCS (Indian Medical Service), Gilbert Minto Elliot was educated at Cheltenham College, and graduated from Woolwich officer's college into the Royal Artillery in April 1915. This sword has a date relating to WW1 and this was either his first or second sword. Elliot served through WW1, was wounded in October 1916 (when only 19 years old), and won the Military Cross (more research required). He was also awarded the DSO subsequently (more research required). He married in 1922 and remained in the Army, and during WW2 Elliot saw extensive service as a senior officer, being involved with Operation Market Garden. Elliot was also awarded the CB and CBE. There is a lot of research potential with this sword and I have only chipped the surface. The sword is in solid and bright condition, suitable for modern parade purposes. It has been well service sharpened, presumably in WW1, and has obviously been polished a lot during its service life, as it was probably used for full dress and parade well after WW1 and through WW2 and beyond. This means that areas of the blade etching are rather worn, because it has been polished a lot! There is a slight recurved bend in the cutting edge, but it is not obvious at all. The hilt is in very good condition, the plating all intact and bright, the grip shagreen and silver wire all good. Together with the service scabbard, frog and belt slings.
