Product Details

EL6352 - A stunning 1896 pattern Wilkinson Patent Solid Hilt cavalry officer's sword, etched to the 14th Hussars and with the officer's name. The officer in question being Lieutenant Laurence Cail Nicholson ( https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205... ), who commissioned into the 14th Hussars in March 1902, having already served as a volunteer in the Mounted Infantry in the Boer War, from 1899-1901 (according to Hart's Annual Army List). In 1903, he purchased this new and very expensive sword. He retired form the regular Army in 1907 and joined the Reserves. He went on to serve in WW1 with the Royal Berkshire Regiment , was Mentioned in Despatches, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO). Sadly he died from wounds received near Ypres in November 1914 , having led his men in a successful attack on a German trench system. The sword is in excellent condition, with magnificently detailed etching, everything solid and sound. Together with field service scabbard.
