Product Details

EL6792 - This superb Wilkinson Patent Solid Hilt 1896 pattern cavalry officer's sword was purchased from Wilkinson in 1900, for John Leslie Reid of the 6th Dragoon Guards (the Caribineers). His name is etched on the blade. Reid was commissioned in 1892, placed temporarily on the Reserve of Officers in 1900 (he then did war service), and died at home in 1911 (at age 40). Reid served for some time in Egypt, and served in South Africa during the Second Anglo Boer War. This sword is well service sharpened and housed in a leather and steel field service scabbard, and having been purchased in 1900 must have been his service sword in the Boer War, replacing whatever sword he had previously. I have done a little research to establish these facts, but there is lots more research potential. The sword itself is Wilkinson's finest work, with the expensive optional extra full width tang. The blade is in good condition, bright and professionally sharpened for service, solid in the hilt. There are some small dark patches here and there. The hilt is in generally good condition - the grip, with composition checkered handle and silver wire is excellent. The guard has age related patina and a minor dent, but it is solid. The scabbard is rather unusual, being of stiff leather with steel fittings, rather than the usual leather-covered wood. A fantastic top level Victorian sword with bags of research potential, it feels amazing in the hand - a proper fighting weapon.
