EL6560 - A very good Gordon Highlanders Field Officer's sword (Major or higher rank) from George V's reign. There is no retailer or maker marked on the blade, but the proof slug is believed to be one of Wilkinson's for trade blades (sold to outfitters), and the quality certainly matches Wilkinson's. Highland Field Officers' swords are not common, and being marked to a specific regiment (on both the blade and hilt, with 'Bydand' regimental motto), in this case the illustrious Gordon Highlanders, makes this sword even more special. The condition is overall very good. Most of the blade remains in high polish and would class as excellent, but for a few small dark stains, with clear frost etching and mirror finish. The hilt is good, the grip complete and tidy, with some age wear to the guard and backpiece. With a little work the guard could be brought up in brightness a little, though together with the age related wear to the correct matching field service scabbard, this shows a sword that was probably worn for years by a high ranking officer. A wonderful sword, it's only sad that we do not know who the officer was.
