EL6179 - A late-Victorian (probably 1880s) light cavalry officer's sword, with large 35.5 inch blade. There is patina to all steel surfaces and some light pitting here and there, with the result that the etching is quite faint and it is not possible to tell who the maker or retailer is. That being said, due to what we can see of the etching I suspect this might have been sold by Hawkes & Co (there is a royal appointment emblem visible). There is also some wear to the shagreen grip and silver wire, and the scabbard has light pitting matching the hilt. These cosmetic issues aside, this is a good quality big sword that is all rock solid and in good functional condition. The edge has been service sharpened, though does not remain very sharp. A good sword which may reward some light restoration.
