ELC1056 - A Victorian hanger, or cutlass, with scabbard. These are often identified as Royal Hospital Corps hangers, though we know that these were being issued and used by a variety of military, naval and civilian organisations, in a few different variations. This example has a 27 inch slightly curved blade (confirmed RHC swords are normally straight) which is very similar to the 1845 pattern Royal Navy cutlass, and being made by Mole and carrying a crown acceptance stamp, we can assume that it was procured by HM Government for the Army, Navy or other state organisation. My guess would be something like dockyard security, or perhaps military police. The ribbed iron grip and brass guard are in good shape and solid on the tang, with original black paint remaining to the grip. The scabbard is almost complete, just missing the brass chape. A very nice sword in the hand and feels like a good weapon.
