EL6466 - An unusual French officer's sword, with two stars applied to the underside of the guard, indicating the rank of Brigadier General (thanks Maxime Chouinard). The hilt form suggests an officer of heavy cavalry, with brown horn grip and wire still in place. It is quite firm on the hilt, with the tiniest amount of movement to the grip. The 33.5 inch blade is of the popular canular form, which after being used as a non-regulation option for a few decades, was adopted for the regulation infantry officers' sword in the M1882. The result is a very nimble sword that is notably back-weighted and very pleasing in the hand. The blade is in excellent clean condition, I would say original satin finish. The scabbard clearly matches the blade, and having one ring might indicate that this sword dates to c.1890-1910. The sword would greatly benefit from gentle cleaning, but is fundamentally in very good condition and a lovely sword, with research potential.
