EL6437 - A top quality Wilkinson 1912 pattern cavalry officer's sword, marked to the 4th (Royal Irish) Dragoon Guards, and bearing the officer's initials.
The officer in question was Sir Richard Gordon Munro, MC, KCMG (1895 - 1967), who gained the rank of Captain in the 4th DG, serving during WW1 and being warded the Military Cross in 1918. He went on to become a diplomat, being made High Commissioner for Southern Rhodesia, and was invested as a Knight Commander, Order of St. Michael and St. George (K.C.M.G.). The attached photograph shows the 19 year old 2nd Lieutenant Richard Gordon Munro, and it was taken at Le Plessis Patte d'Oie in France, on the 28th August 1914.
"2nd Lt Munro with members of his Troop of B Squadron during the Retreat from Mons. This was the day when his regiment, the 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards, badly mauled at Audregnies on the 24th, reassembled for the first time."
The sword itself is in very good condition, with some areas of staining and light pitting to parts of the blade, but otherwise very good. Everything is solid and tight. A truly fabulous piece of history with lots of research potential.
