ELC1028 - A truly stunning example of a pre-numbered (before 1854) Wilkinson infantry officer's sword, in brass scabbard (perhaps for Field Officer rank). Due to not being numbered, there is no way we can identify this to an officer, but the condition is superb and the sword must date to between 1845 and 1854, with a strong likelihood from the etching style that it is around 1850-54. Moreover, the blade has been well service-sharpened, so it is very likely that this sword was carried in one of the wars of the 1850s or 1860s, such as the Crimea, Mutiny or China. The condition is outstanding, with a bright blade, crisp etching, blade firm in the hilt and the brass all bright. The hinged guard works perfectly and strongly and the grip shagreen and wire is excellent. Of course it also feels great in the hand, with a particularly nice grip shape for indexing the edge in a cut. A lovely sword.
