EL6183 - A very scarce mid-Victorian Scots Guards sergeant's sword and scabbard. The sword itself is in good condition, with a bright blade having minor patina, carrying the Royal supplier Hawkes' name etched to the ricasso. The blade is 32.5 inches long, but of relatively slender proportions, making this a light sword in the hand. It seems as though it has probably been service sharpened at some point, so this may be of Crimean War era. The scabbard, often not surviving with this pattern of sword, has had two repairs to the leather, which could be improved upon, but it is complete and fits the blade well. There is a tiny bit of movement to the brass guard, but generally the hilt is quite solid on the tang. The guard carries the Scots Guards emblem and the side langet bears the thistle motif. The shagreen grip is in nice condition, with copper alloy wire intact and brass lion head pommel. A scarce and desirable sword, of a type which does not come up for sale very often.
