Product Details

EL6348 - A scarce early George IV period 1822 pattern staff officer's sword, dating to 1822-1830. George IV's cypher is etched on both sides of the blade and this model of sword was introduced in 1822. The guard features the sword and baton emblem of staff officers and the blade is a characteristic 34.5 inches long. The hilt retains a lot of the original gilt, though has been deformed and repaired during its life, resulting in a less than perfect marriage to the blade shoulders (pictured). It has also lost the leather washer and been re-peened, but the hilt is now quite firm on the tang, with only a tiny bit of movement notable. The grip shagreen and wire are in good condition overall and the blade is smooth, with clear etching, and a light grey patina. The scabbard matches the sword and this is a rare sword to find now, especially this early. I have priced according to the deficiencies in the hilt condition, though these could perhaps be improved by an expert restorer, which would increase the value in my opinion.
