EL6568 - A scarce and lovely 1827 pattern Prosser Rifles officer's sword, etched to the LX (6oth) Regiment and King's Royal Rifle Corps (KRRC). It's difficult to pin an exact date on this, as the Prosser emblem says 'Maker to the Royal Family', rather than King or Queen, so I am inclined to believe it dates to the 1830s. The pipeback blade was replaced in 1845, so we can say that in any case the sword certainly dates to between 1827 and 1845 at the widest. Prosser were the most renowned makers in this period, and their swords were amongst the most expensive. The sword itself is in very good condition, though would benefit from some cleaning (the inside of the guard for example has some rust, probably because there was originally a leather liner that trapped moisture there. The grip is in almost perfect condition, with all the shagreen, still quite dark, and grip wire intact. The hilt is solid on the tang with no movement. The blade is excellent, bright, clean and with deep etching - the only flaw to mention is that there are a few small nicks to the cutting edge. The steel scabbard is the correct original one and fits perfectly, and has been painted black (perhaps original). A rare and fantastic sword, which feels light and lively in the hand, to an illustrious regiment, by the top maker.
