EL6597 - A scarce type of Royal Navy cutlass, which I have only seen a handful of in my many years of collecting and dealing. The blade and guard follow the 1845 pattern format, and the blade is 29 inches long, suggesting these pre-date 1845. Some little bit of movement in the hilt, with much original black paint remaining on the hilt. The blade with patina, but in sound condition, service sharpened and with some small nicks from use. The finger-grooved cast iron grip is fantastic in the hand, and I find this a very pleasing model of cutlass - it's just a shame we know so little about them. My educated guess is that they date to about 1840-45.
