Product Details

EL6487 - A very rare Prosser-style light cavalry officer's sword, featuring the huge 'yelman' or quill point, by Thomas Jackson. Jackson is only recorded as making swords in Birmingham from 1818 to 1821, which makes this a rare example, and clearly he was doing top quality work on a par with Prosser or Gill. Featuring the 1796 light cavalry style hilt, this type of sword was to be soon superseded by the 1821 pattern hilt, again confirming the dating of this example. While the sword has very dark patina and small areas of encrusted surface corrosion, it is in generally good condition and is a very robust sword. The pipe-backed blade is just under 33 inches long and very broad, with a very reassuring heft in the hand. It does not seem to have ever been service sharpened. The grip retains most of the original black leather covering, though no grip wire, which was probably originally present. There is some movement to the guard, although the leather washer is still present. The scabbard is sadly missing, but otherwise a fantastic no-nonsense fighting sword.
