ON HOLD EL6278 - A lovely late-Napoleonic light cavalry officer's pipeback sabre with beaknose pommel. This combination of pipeback blade, beaknose pommel and style of guard date this sword to c.1810-1820 most likely. It is probably British, though could possibly also be Dutch or German, in the British style. The 34 inch blade is hefty and broad, with 'damascus' pattern etched to the surface (which might indicate German manufacture). The hilt is firm on the tang. It is complete with matching scabbard, featuring split double rings. The shagreen and grip wire are very good. The steel all has patina and light pitting to the hilt and scabbard, though the blade is smooth and the damascus pattern still quite clear despite the patina. The edge has been sharpened. A really good sword which feels fantastic and powerful in the hand.
