EL6819 - An impressive Victorian British Indian Army cavalry sword and scabbard, with a massive blade of nearly 36.5 Inches long. The sword is completely unmarked, with no sign of either a maker/retailer or unit markings. This makes it very difficult to date or assign, but the general design and scabbard leave no doubt that this was for Indian service. The blade is in excellent condition, with a satin finish and expertly applied service sharpening. The hilt is in equally good condition, with good shagreen, and the tang has been left a bit longer, showing the thread and nut assembly. It seems possible that this was a replaced hilt during its service life, and the grip is a little shorter than standard British grips (as was often the case with Indian cavalry swords). The scabbard is very interesting, having a wooden liner only at the top, the rest being supple leather - the drag at the bottom is sadly missing, but I presume this would have been steel or brass, or perhaps just leather reinforced. A really lovely big sword in great condition.
