EL6189 - A rare City of London Yeomanry sword by Hamburger, Rogers & Co. These were produced in limited numbers during the Second Anglo-Boer War, around 1900, for the City of London Yeomanry who were going off to South Africa. They are a unique design which is closely based on the 1895/1897 infantry officer's sword, but with a solid shell guard and the blade scaled up to cavalry size (34 inches long and a little broader). Hamburger supplied most or all of them. This example is in average condition, with dark patina all over and some untouched light surface rust on the scabbard. It could do with some cleaning up, but is fundamentally sound. The blade is service sharpened for South Africa and is firm in the hilt. The wooden grip and steel guard and chequered backstrap are all sound, just requiring cleaning. The regimental stamps are deep and clear on the scabbard. One of the double rings on the scabbard has been broken off. The sword sheathes well.
