Product Details

EL6439 - This rare 1882 Long Pattern cavalry sword (made in July 1884) is highly unusual in that it has been shortened to comply with the post-1885 regulations, presumably by the 5th Dragoon Guards armourer. While the 1882 Short has a blade of just over 33 inches, and the 1882 Long has a blade of just over 35 inches, this example has a blade of just over 34 inches. As the manufacture date of July 1884 shows that this is an 1882 pattern sword, I can only assume that it was originally an 1882 Long, which was then shortened when the new 1885 pattern came out. The condition is quite good overall and everything is solid, though it is sadly missing the scabbard. There are numerous markings, including the 5 DG, showing this was held by the 5th Dragoon Guards. A scarce regimental sword, with what appears to be the original buff leather sword knot.
