Product Details

EL6751 - An interesting and unusual sabre, probably dating to circa 1800. Featuring a plain, slightly curved, un-fullered 29 inch blade. The grip is ribbed horn, reminiscent of some British and American spadroon and hanger grips. The brass guard is clearly inspired by the 1796 light cavalry sabre, so probably post-dates this, but likely not by much. It is difficult to say whether this is a military or hunting sword, but with a 29 inch blade, I believe this to be for an infantry officer, and I suspect it might be American made or made for the American market. Condition is good, the hilt is firm on the tang, the blade is bright and clean, with some light pitting, and the hilt is in good condition (there is a stable split in the horn, which seems to have been treated at some point, but it all seems solid now). No scabbard. Great handling, with quite a choppy balance. An interesting sword worthy of further research.
