Product Details

EL6173 - A scarce gunner's sidearm, made by Woolley & Deakin between around 1800 and 1808. This is a hefty chopper, designed as much for chopping wood and clearing brush as for fighting with. The straight single-edged blade is clearly stamped with the reputable maker's name and is in quite good condition, except for patina, some staining and a bit of blunting damage at the tip. The hilt is quite firm on the tang, with a little bit of movement to the brass guard. The brass guard and backstrap are in nice shape and the leather is remaining to the grip. The scabbard has perished, but the brass locket remains, which could enable a reconstruction of the leather scabbard. These artillery hangers are not common and this is an important sidearm of the late Napoleonic era.
