EL6900 - An early Wilkinson Royal Artillery officer's sword, numbered 9277 (for 1858) and I believe much be attributed to Horace Hervey Webber. Webber was commissioned as a Lieutenant on 21 June 1856. He was promoted to Second Captain on 29 March 1867. Unusually, Captain Webber died in May 1869 from drowning, while crossing the Andes mountains in Chile! ( https://www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/735... ) A photo of Webber survives here: https://www.npg.org.uk/collections/search/portrait... and also here: https://npgshop.org.uk/products/horace-webber-npg-... The sword is missing it's scabbard, and has dark patina overall, with some pitting to the guard. The blade has crisp etching and is firm in the hilt, but has a number of small nicks to the edges. The shagreen is worn from use, but the grip wire is all present. This is a very good quality sword with nice proportions and great in the hand, but in need of some restoration, which I think would be well rewarded. There is certainly also potential for lots more research of this interesting officer.
