Product Details

EL6681 - A good infantry officer's sword, made by Pillin, for Edward Kirkman Loyd of the 28th (North Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot. Loyd commissioned in 1870 and served in Malta early in his career, was promoted to Lieutenant in 1871 and Captain in 1880. In 1887 he was placed on the reserve list of officers, as retired (but still on the reserve in case of war), and he got married in April 1888. The sword is a good example of an officer's sword c.1870, by quality maker Pillin. The hilt is firm on the tang and the grip is good. The blade is on the narrower end of the spectrum, which does seem to have been popular in the 1870s. In overall good condition and complete with matching scabbard (though the scabbard throat is missing).
