Product Details

EL6292 - A mid-18th century Scottish or English backsword. 31 inch backsword blade, with single fuller located to the rear, slightly rounded point, edge sharpened and with a few small nicks from another blade. The basket of classic form, with lower ring at the pommel junction, bun pommel with incised cross lines. The basket and grip are loose on the tang, due to the gap created at top and bottom from the loss of the original liner (this could be restored). Shagreen mostly remaining to the grip and remnants of brass grip wire. I am sure many dealers would describe this as 'Culloden era', but in honesty I am not sure that it is Scottish or indeed from as early as the 1740s. I suspect it is Northern English and from a bit later in the 1700s, but not much. Due to the length, this would almost certainly be carried by an infantry officer or civilian, rather than a mounted soldier. A comparatively rare sword and very much worthy of expert restoration. It is basically untouched and fresh to market, having been found in storage.
