An early to late 1700s European hanger, or cutoe, probably English or German. Often termed hunting hangers, in fact these were carried in all sorts of functions, from military and naval, to civilian self defence. This is a nice workmanlike example, with a very interesting maker's stamp on both sides of the blade. Antler grip and brass hilt furniture, with fluted shell guard and knucklebow. Small amount of movement in the hilt. Blade 20.5 inches.
