EL6922 - A Georgian hanger or sabre, by Woolley, dating to around 1795-1800. Many of these were made for militia, but they were also used by various branches of service, including garrison artillery and according to some sources, fortification and warehouse guards and coast guards. The Royal Armouries have a number of similar examples which are known to have been supplied as part of weapon sets for militia during the Napoleonic Wars. This example has the typical form, with a 1796 light cavalry sabre-type blade, married to a brass guard and cast iron ribbed grip. There is a unit marking to the langet, but I don't know what this indicates - research might reveal that. Everything is solid with no movement, the brass guard is in good shape, and the blade has overall dark patina and some encrustation from corrosion - this could probably be cleaned up further. An interesting sword and feels great in the hand.
