Product Details

EL6675 - A very good quality George IV 1822 pattern infantry officer's sword, with initials and crest to the scabbard. In generally very good to excellent condition, with much original polish to the blade and a lot of the gilt remaining to the brass hilt. The blade seems to have been sharpened and the scabbard is brass rather than the usual leather for this period, which may indicate something about the rank and/or status of the owner. There are some cosmetic issues, such as some rust at the base of the blade above the leather washer, and a few rust spots further up the blade, and some shagreen loss to the grip. There is also some movement in the wooden grip and the ferrule/collar. There is a visible damp/shrinkage crack in the wood visible where the shagreen has been lost, but that crack seems stable. Some careful restoration could remedy most of these issues, and overall therefore it is in otherwise very good condition for the age (1822-1830). There is also good research potential, with the crest and initials - I have not researched it.
