EL6100 - A good example of the 1821 pattern light cavalry sabre, in this case with various markings, including regimental, proof and manufacturer. The spine of the blade is marked Cast Steel and Francis Deakin, who operated in Birmingham from 1811-1839. Therefore this sword must date between about 1825 (when this pattern reached Yeomanry regiments) and 1839. The blade also carried government approval stamps and in large letters the trooper number and S.Y.C., which is probably Surrey or Sussex Yeomanry Cavalry. The steel scabbard still has original belt hangers attached and there is a white felt sword knot, but that is probably a more modern replacement. The sword is all solid and there is a reasonably good degree of preservation to the leather grip covering. The steel is all very dark with patina and with some pitting to all parts, but most especially on the scabbard. These are not very common swords now and especially with such good regimental and maker markings.
