ELC1035 - A fantastic untouched and complete Gill 1796 pattern light cavalry officer's sword, featuring a beautifully blued and engraved blade. Gill was a top maker of the day and his blades, as seen here, were warranted 'not to fail'. This example has a very clean blade for a 200 year old sword, with 90% of the blue remaining and a good degree of polish to the un-blued parts of the blade. The blade does seem to have been professionally sharpened during its life. The blade and hilt are all tight and solid, unlike most 1796 sabres, as the leather washer remains in place and quite complete. The guard, backstrap and scabbard should all be carefully cleaned, but are in nice condition overall. One of the rings of the scabbard and its mount has unfortunately been lost. The grip and wire are also in remarkably good condition, untouched and ready for some light cleaning. A really genuine and lovely sword, wonderful in the hand and all tight and original, by a top maker of the day.
