ELC1083 - A scarce 1796 pattern Heavy Cavalry trooper's sword, with the late-Napoleonic Wars spear-pointed adaptation and reduced inner guard. By top maker Gill. Lacking its scabbard, but otherwise a really great example, in healthy condition. Bright steel with minimal pitting, to either hilt or blade. Service sharpening to the 34 1/4 inch blade, and spear-pointed for action in the last phases of the Napoleonic Wars. The inner edge of the guard has been reduced to make it more practical to wear - an adaptation we see on a fair number of 1796 heavy cavalry swords that were being used in the later stages of the war. The leather-covered wooden grip is in very good condition for the age and overall the hilt is very firm on the tang, with only a slight bit of movement in the backpiece and ferrule. This pattern is now becoming very difficult to find, and is much sought after.
