ELC1018 - An immaculate mid-Victorian light cavalry officer's sword, etched to the 7th Queen's Royal Hussars, with battle honours and the crest of John Gaspard Watkins Le Marchant (grandson of the famous Le Marchant on 1796 sword exercise and sword design).
Le Marchant commissioned into the 7th Hussars in March 1861 (when he purchased this sword) and retired in 1868, serving on the North West Frontier in 1863-64. He was personally thanked for his services by Sir Hugh Rose, the Commander in Chief, and was Mentioned in Despatches. The sword is accordingly service sharpened for this campaign.
The blade is in wonderful condition, with bright polish and deep etching. The hilt is solid on the tang and the shagreen and silver grip wire are in great condition. Complete with scabbard.
A fantastic sword in its own right, but with the Le Marchant family connection and the service history of this officer, this is a really great sword.
