Product Details

EL6707 - A named 1st West Yorkshire Rifle Volunteers officer's sword retailed by Hobson (made by Pillin), circa 1860. Named by provenance to Sir Ian Ingilby, of the Ingilby Baronets, of Ripley Castle, North of Harrogate. I cannot be certain of this provenance, but have left the label attached in case it is useful for further research. This is a good quality sword, with gilding remaining to the hilt and the black patent leather liner intact. It is notable that it is the 1845 pattern infantry pattern rather than the Rifles pattern, but I have noted over the years that when the Rifle Volunteers movement started in 1859, a lot of these regiments took the infantry rather than Rifles pattern for their officers, perhaps because they had developed from Militia regiments previously. There is some light corrosion here and there on the blade, but I believe this can be cleaned or mitigated with careful attention. The sword is otherwise in good condition, with fantastic detailed etching and original polish remaining, together with the original dress scabbard and even the buff leather sword knot.
