ELC1033 - An exceptionally clean example of an 1899 pattern cavalry troopers' sword by Wilkinson. The sword and scabbard both with numerous stamps, showing that the sword was made by Wilkinson in January 1902 and the scabbard was made at Enfield in 1900. Probably these two were put together in regimental stores a century ago, because this blade does not seem to have been without a scabbard for any notable period of time, having a very high polish and the crispness of the stamps showing that this is largely or entirely original. Despite the sword's 1902 date, it has been cleanly and well service sharpened, so it may have been sent to South Africa at the end of the Second Anglo-Boer War, or perhaps it saw service in one of the small wars before WW1, or even in WW1 with yeomanry. There are no regimental markings that I can see, but the various other markings show that this sword was in service and was sold out of service at some point. The hilt is very clean and tidy, the leather grip slabs having crisp chequering and everything is solid.
